through that year to 1976.
In 1977, he was elected
as one of the Vice Presidents
of SSAC and held that
position until becoming
President in 1978. He
was President until 1980
and was Past President

and then during the years

EDMONTON
My dad wanted to
talk about the goal I somehow
scored in the Masters Games
hockey tournament. |
It seemed a worthwhile topic of discussion given the last time I'd put a puck past a goalie in competitive hockey was in 1976.
" I got the puck on my forehand and got it by the defenceman who was screening the goalie and it went in," I said.
" Who passed it to you?"
" Mitch made a beautiful pass," I said.
" Good old Mitch," my dad said. "From way back?"
Good old Mitch from way back, I thought. Mitch and I grew up playing hockey in northeast Edmonton in the 1970s. It made me realize yet again that Masters hockey is all about making what's old new again.
Back again is the quiet joy of sitting in the dressing room with the guys, slowly transforming from a crew of jeans and T-shirts into one cohesive unit, the Edmonton Emperors.
The thrill of walking from the dressing room to the ice is as keen as it was in minor hockey. The fans cheer. It's just a friendly tournament but there they all are, the wives, the mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, sons and daughters.
" Come on, Kubish," a fan yells. "Let's get the forecheck going!" That's my wife.
The praise, unalloyed of any envy, for a pure play. It's all the same as it ever was. What is a little different this time around is the pain.
|
It's true that playing in this competition has brought back memories of youth but that feeling doesn't extend to both knees, the lower left back, three-quarters of my neck, and my lungs. Any residual pain after the game is muted by the sight of the families waiting in the lobby.
" Good game, dad," my son says. "We saw your goal."
And then something else that's new hits me as the game is replayed in bouquets of excited conversation in the lobby: hockey watched and talked about is not the same as hockey played.
My sons and their friends play hockey all winter and, at times, under some pretty tough emotional circumstances. It is still the case that parents criticize from the stands and lecture their child-athlete.
But hockey - whether the Masters Games variety or Atom AA -- is too fast for parents. Decisions made on the ice must be instantaneous. From the stands, it looks like table hockey. On the ice, it's a blur of colour and sweat.
" You know," I told my son as we drive home, "hockey ain't easy."
" I know," he said.
" Remind me to remind myself of that when you're playing next season."
" Okay, dad."
Glenn Kubish plays left wing for the Edmonton Emperors, who won the silver medal in the men's 40+ B division.

Southside survives
marathon final
STRATHMORE
It was a championship
game for the ages. It
was a championship game
that went on for ages.
|
Jean
Lefebvre
Calgary Herald
March 28, 2005 |
|
In an incredible finale, Edmonton's Southside Athletic Club became Alberta's midget triple-A champions Sunday afternoon -- and evening -- at the Strathmore Family Centre.
The Southsiders needed nearly 141 minutes of hockey -- almost six hours in real time -- to dispose of the UFA Bisons by a 2-1 count in a thriller of a fifth and deciding game. And it marks the first time a team from Edmonton has won the Alberta midget league title.
The marathon was decided
at 10:37 of quintuple
overtime that's
five, folks when
Cameron Ritchie hammered
a point shot past Bisons
netminder Bradley Eidness.
Ritchie got the chance to do the hero bit because of the relentless robbery of Southside puckblocker Keanan Boomer, who time and time again repelled Bisons attacks. The sticky-fingered Boomer made 81 saves in all, including 50 in overtime alone. The most spectacular example of OT handiwork was a penalty shot rebuff of Bison Zachary Boychuk in extra period No. 4.
"He's what you
call a thief, I guess,"
chuckled SSAC head coach
Larry Draper, adding
he's seen Boomer pull
this larceny routine
in earlier playoff defeats
of the Maple Leafs and
Leduc.
" Amazing," declared Ritchie. "The amount of saves he made? Wide-open nets for them and he comes out of nowhere. And the penalty shot? That's amazing, too. I don't know what we'd do without that guy."
What the Athletics wouldn't be doing without him is advancing to the Pacific regionals later this week in Salmon Arm, B.C., one step away from the national championships.

On countless occasions
Sunday, the Bisons thought
they were the ones who'd
head west. When it wasn't
Boomer flashing a blocker,
a trapper, a pad or
a stick, it was UFA
shooters such Sean Goodwin,
Leo Lacourciere or Keith
Van Bavel rattling a
post or crossbar.
"We were half
a puck away from moving
on," sighed Bisons
boss Doug Thurston,
whose club won consecutive
OT games to erase a
2-0 series deficit and
force Game 5. "The
hockey gods just weren't
on our side today. I
don't think this team
deserved to lose."
"We feel quite
fortunate to win,"
conceded Draper, "but
you know what? Our kids
deserve it for their
hard work."
Outshot 82-44 on the day, the South Siders needed a Bradley Tierney goal with 3:22 remaining in regulation to negate Goodwin's first-period tally and force all that overtime.
In 42 years in the sport, Draper says he's never seen anything like Sunday's drama.
"Never in a game
with this kind of pressure
for the kids,"
he responded, "and
as long as it was. Never."
The closest Thurston has come to Sunday's epic was when he himself was a player for the Strathmore midgets.
"In the provincial
semifinals," he
recalled, "we went
to a four-overtime game...
but we won it that year."
No such luck this time around for Thurston's troops.

NO PERSON MAY BE ON THE BENCH WITHOUT BEING CHA CARDED BY SSAC's Registrar.
|
CHA INFORMATION BULLETIN 02/21 (a re-release of Bulletin 02/10) SUMMED UP:
Any alteration to a
CSA approved helmet or
facial protector automatically
destroys the CSA approval.
Not only is there a safety
concern, but also the
insurance coverage could
be at risk if the equipment
has been altered and an
injury is sustained as
a result.Referees have
been instructed to watch
for infractions in pre-game
warmups and penalize without
exception or warning (and
remove the player until
such time as the illegal
equipment is replaced).
PLAYERS
and PARENTS,
it is your responsibility
to ensure all equipment
meets safety standards
and that full equipment
(including neck protector
and mouthguard) is worn
at ALL
TIMES (games and
practices).

SHARED RESPECT between all participants in the game.
The enjoyment derived
from playing hockey can

or tactics that are intended
to subvert the skill or
safety of the participants.
The Canadian Hockey Association
is aiming to eliminate
these events and tactics
through education and
strict application of
selected rules.In this
way the "standard
of play" is expected
to rise as time passes.
It takes teamwork to
bring about change.Coaches,

DID YOU KNOW
|
|
If a player is not wearing
an approved throat protector,
a Minor penalty may be
assessed. When a player
wears his neck protector
improperly, he may be
assessed a Misconduct
penalty.
Violations during pre-game
warm-ups will be reported
on the official game report.
Any player or team offical
who engages in verbal
taunts, insults, or intimidation
based on discriminatory
grounds (race, ethnicity,
religion, gender, sexual
orientation, language)
may be assessed a Game
Misconduct or a
Gross Misconduct penalty.
A goaltender is "not
fair game" just because
he is outside the goal
crease area. Unnecessary
contact with a goaltender
may result in a Minor
or Major and Game Misconduct
penalty. Likewise, Referees
will be alert to penalize
goaltenders for tripping,
slashing, or spearing
in the vicinity of the
goal.
|
A high stick Minor or
Major and Game Misconduct
may be assessed when the
carrying of the stick
or contact with the opponent
is above the normal height
of the shoulder of the
opponent. A breakaway
is defined as being "in
the neutral or attacking
zone" (previously
the guideline was the
centre red line).
Any team official who
gets on the ice after
the start of the game
without the permission
of the Referee may be
assessed a Bench Minor
or Game Misconduct penalty.
If a Game Misconduct is
assessed, the team official
will be ordered to the
dressing room for the
remainder of the game
and a report will be submitted
for consideration of further
penalties. Slew Footing
is the action of tripping
a player by knocking a
player's skates out from
behind by a kicking or
leg dragging motion.
A penalty shall not be assessed if, in the Referee's opinion, a player is unquestionably hook-checking the puck and obtains possession of it, thereby tripping the puck carrier.
