(after July 31, cash, money order only)

  • The Club is currently comprised of 3 Bantam AA teams and 1 Bantam AAA team. At Bantam AAA it is expected that the team composition will primarily, but not exclusively, be 14 year-olds while Bantam AA teams should be comprised of approximately, but not necessarily, 50% each of 13 and 14 year-olds. Any Peewee-age player trying out must make a special application to the EMHA Registrar. Underage players must be evaluated as being in the top one-third of the Bantam AAA team or return to the Federation Program.

  • Bantam tryouts will begin SUNDAY, AUGUST 28th at Arena TBA. Invitation letters with registration instructions will be e-mailed to eligible players early in June. You will receive an email the week of August 22nd advising of the first ice time(s).

  • Bantam players will be divided randomly into groups according to the order in which registrations for tryouts are received and the player’s preferred tryout position as declared on the application form. All 13 and 14 year olds will be initially grouped together, with both age categories observed and evaluated by the coaching staff of the Bantam AAA and 3 Bantam AA teams and by the corresponding Category Directors as well as other members of the Hockey Operations Committee, as required.

  • Ice permitting, there will be a separate goalie evaluation.

  • An injury or illness incurred at tryout time might cause the player to lose out on an opportunity to try out with SSAC. It is at the coaches' discretion whether or not he wishes to take an ill or injured player for further evaluation. The Club is not required to hold positions open for ANY player while he heals from an illness or injury, or is trying out with another Club in the AA Player Transfer Draft.

  • After approximately three or four ice times, the Bantam AAA coach will select up to 40 players to continue evaluating in a group separate from the remaining Bantam candidates. After two or three additional skates, the Bantam AAA coach will reduce the group down to no more than 34. This group will continue to try out together with numbers pared down throughout the next two weeks,

  • The remaining Bantam players will be re-grouped for further observation and evaluation by the coaching staff of the Bantam AA teams. On the Labour Day weekend, the Bantam AA coaches will conduct a draft, each selecting no more than 25 per team of the remaining 13- and 14-year-old players. With the players now separated into four evaluation camps, tryouts will continue throughout the month of September with players being let go within timelines established by the Club.

  • At the Bantam levels, rosters will be pared down to within one or two players of being “set” by the start of the SSAC Fall Tournament (2011 = September 12-18) and be finalized shortly thereafter. If the tryouts in your district begin during this time frame, it is advisable that you communicate with your district Registrar or Bantam Category Director to ensure knowledge of their tryout time lines.

  • All Bantam-age players released by all Bantam coaches will return to the Federation program, or may call our Registrar Marg (780-436-6556) and enter the AA Council Player Transfer draft ( www.hockeyedmonton.ca )

  • If the tryouts in your District begin during this time frame, it is advisable that you communicate with your Association/District Registrar or Bantam Category Director to ensure knowledge of their tryout time times.

  • Note that first year players in the Bantam AAA league (AMBHL) and all players in the Bantam AA league (ERBHL) must wear COLOURED mouth guards.

2011 Midget Tryout Schedule (to come)
2011 Midget Tryout Registration Form
(to download full instructions, click this Word file)

Quick Instructions:

Step 1 – Register the player online at this Hockey Canada link

Step 2 – Fill out and sign the forms in this downloadable Word file

A) SSAC Player/Parent Code of Conduct
B) EMHA Good of the Game
C) SSAC 2010-11 Registration Form

Step 3 – Send forms and cheque to Marg Brownoff
(after July 31, cash, money order only)

  • The Club is currently comprised of one Minor Midget 15 AAA team, one Minor Midget 15 AA team, two Midget AA teams and one Major Midget AAA team. It is expected that player composition at Major Midget AAA will be primarily 16 and 17 year-olds. At Midget AA, teams will be comprised of a mix of 16-, and 17-year-olds. All teams in the two Minor Midget 15 leagues will be comprised of 15 year olds only. AMMHL is the league for Minor Midget AAA. REMHL is the league for Minor Midget AA.

  • Midget tryouts will begin MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 5th at Arena TBA.   Invitation letters with registration instructions will be e-mailed to eligible players early in June. You will receive an email the week of August 29th advising of the first ice time(s).

  • First year midgets (15) will be grouped separately from 16- and 17- year olds with coaches from Midget AAA, Midget AA, and Minor Midget 15, Category Directors and members of the Hockey Operations Committee observing. Groupings will occur randomly according to the order in which registrations for tryouts are received and the player’s preferred tryout position as declared on the application form.

  • Ice permitting, there may be a separate goalie evaluation.

  • Players who choose to try out for Junior teams must also register for SSAC’s tryouts. If the player does not return from Junior camp (i.e. he makes a Junior team), the tryout fee will be refunded. Once a player returns from Junior camp, he will be integrated into the SSAC tryout process with evaluation by the Midget AAA coach as well as the Midget AA coaching staff.

NO player returning from a Junior camp AFTER October 15th  will be accepted into Midget tryouts or on to a Midget AAA, AA, or Minor Midget 15 AAA team with ANY EMHA Club.  NO releases to Clubs outside EMHA's boundaries will be permitted either. (That means the player's options after October 15th will be to play at Junior B or Junior C or the Federation Midget program.)

  • All players who choose to try out for Junior teams should receive a Hockey Alberta Permission to Try Out form from the management of the Junior team. This form must be signed by the Hockey Edmonton Registrar Nadine Shimizu or Betty Chmilar at 780-478-9509 / fax 780-456-1419.

  • After approximately two to three ice times, the Midget AAA coach will select up to 40 players to continue evaluating in a group separate from the remaining Midget candidates. This group will continue to try out together with numbers pared down throughout the next week, going into the pre-season Midget AAA Tournament (Sep 12-18) with no more than 25 players. At the end of the tournament, the Midget AAA coach will reduce his roster to 20.

  • On the weekend of Sep 10-11, the Midget AA coaches will each select up to 25 players from the remaining 16-, and 17-year-old candidates and a selection of up to 25 players of the remaining 15-year-olds will be selected by the Minor Midget 15 AAA coach for further evaluation. From the remaining list, the Minor Midget 15 AA coach will select 25 players for continued evaluation. Any player not drafted by the Major Midget AAA, Midget AA, or Minor Midget 15 coaches will return to their Federation program or may call our Registrar, Marg 780-436-6556 to enter the AA Council Player Transfer Draft (www.hockeyedmonton.ca). Evaluations of drafted players will continue in the five new groupings, with constant player movement from Junior to AAA to AA to Minor Midget AAA and Minor Midget AA, with roster numbers pared down according to Hockey Edmonton and SSAC timelines. It is the Club’s desire to complete this process as quickly as possible while allowing players a fair opportunity to display their abilities.

  • At the same time, Midget-age players may be trying out at Junior. Hockey Edmonton has a strict timeline of October 15th with regard to players returning from Junior. See note 5 regarding players who return from a Junior team after October 15th. Players who are in the Club's tryout process before the Oct 15th deadline, cannot be released from the Club after October 16th, but player movement between Major Midget AAA, Midget AA, and Minor Midget 15 may continue until January 10th (with the approval of the Hockey Operations Committee). Needless to say, the process of placing players within the Midget category can be a lengthy and complicated process.

  • If the tryouts in your District begin during this time frame, it is advisable that you communicate with your District Registrar or Midget Category Director to ensure knowledge of their tryout time lines.

TRYOUT Information applicable to ALL players

  • SSAC's tryout fee is $250. If your registration for tryouts forms and fee are received by the Registrar before July 1st, you will receive a $50 discount (fee $200). From July 1st to July 31st, the fee will be $250. If the forms and/or fee are received after July 31st, a late charge of $100 will be applied for a $350 fee. REGISTER EARLY & SAVE. We need the information from the tryout forms processed and in place in order to meet registration requirements and to accommodate tryout planning and therefore offer an incentive to you to assist us with that process in a timely manner.

  • The tryout fee will cover tryouts (a minimum of four ice sessions) until the player is let go or the end of September, whichever occurs first. Once tryouts begin, this fee is non-refundable. Between June 1st and the 1st day of tryouts, the tryout fee is refundable minus a $40 admin fee if notice is given, in writing, to SSAC Registrar Marg Brownoff prior to the 1st day of tryouts. There will be no additional fee for participation in SSAC’s Fall Tournament (Sep 12-18 BAA, BAAA; Sep 19-25 MAA , M15AAA; Sep 29-Oct 2 M15AA) or the MAAA Pre-Season Tournament in Leduc on Sep 12-18. Exhibition games may be used to assist the coaching staff in reaching final selections and the players may be charged a small additional fee to defray costs of referees, ice rental, and other team expenses.

  • From the first week of September to the conclusion of the SSAC / MAAA pre-season tournament, the nine team rosters will be pared down to a maximum of 17 skaters and 2 goaltenders (18 skaters and 2 goaltenders at MAAA). It should be noted, however, that player movement between SSAC teams may continue until January 10th (with the approval of the Hockey Operations Committee).

  • All Bantam players released after September 5 and Midget players released after September 13 will be done in a one-on-one interview with the coaches giving a brief explanation as to the reason(s) and providing the player with the options open to him along with applicable phone numbers. (Please see AA Council Player Transfer Draft www.hockeyedmonton.ca or call Marg at 780-436-6556).

  • Tryout drills are the responsibility of the on-ice coaches in discussion with the off-ice coaches and Category Directors

  • It must be presumed by the player and the parent(s) that the Coaching staff will evaluate the player in a fair and equitable manner, keeping in mind that the criteria for selection is not only based on skill, but on team roles and player's attitude and character. All players, parents, and coaches must conduct themselves within the expected standards outlined in the SSAC Code of Conduct and Hockey Edmonton Good of the Game.

  • The South Side Athletic Club leaves the evaluation of all players to the teams’ coaching staff members who are exposed to the player's skill and character and are prepared to evaluate the players according to their plans for the team they have been asked to manage for the hockey season. The SSAC Board members do not provide input into this process beyond "underage player" guidelines.

  • When a player is released,

    • he may be invited to try out by the coach of one of the other South Side teams at the same level, or
    • continue to try out at the next lower level, or
    • through the Registrar, Marg Brownoff (780-436-6556), request entry to the AA Council Player Transfer draft ( www.hockeyedmonton.ca ), or
    • return to the Federation program.

  • It is necessary to have team managers in place as soon as possible so we ask parents with sons/daughters trying out to give consideration to being a team manager. A managers' meeting is held early in the season to lay out responsibilities to the Club and to the team he/she is managing. An interim manager may be named by the Coach to assist in the team's activities until such time as the roster is set.

  • Our first responsibility is to develop hockey players from within the south side of Edmonton. Therefore, any import players (at Midget AAA) or Transfer Draft players should not be rated the 18th or 19th player on the team.

  • Once a player is selected to a team (late September, early October), registration fees are due in two installments. the first fee payment is due Oct 1 and the second may be post-dated to November 15th. At this point, the team is responsible for all team expenses including additional practice ice required over and above the allocation assigned to the team by the Club (approx. 2 practices per week).

  • Some community leagues offer Bingo credits, which may be transferred to SSAC to assist you with registration fees.  Please contact your community league regarding this matter to establish their preferred practices and procedures.  Cheques should be made payable to "SSAC".

  • All SOUTH SIDE ATHLETIC CLUB teams shall declare official team rosters as per Hockey Edmonotn Rules of Registration and in accordance with the timelines set out by the SSAC Board of Directors and Registrar.

Once you have made a team, what you can expect next...

Bingo and Volunteer Commitment

As a parent you will be required to work at least 1 bingo date for the SSAC. In addition, you will be required to volunteer, as required, for yearly club functions such at the John Ferguson Memorial Fall Tournament, Minor Hockey Week, EBIT Christmas Tournament, Provincials, casino, team activities, etc. Because our bingo license runs for 12 months of the year and hockey for 6, some teams will be assigned Summer and/or early Fall bingo dates. All monies made from bingo go directly to the Club and are used to defray costs. You will be required to submit two undated cheques in the amount of $200.00 each which will not be cashed if you work your assigned bingo date(s) and if you comply with your volunteer assignments.

Club Equipment

The Club will supply each incoming player with game jerseys, and socks. Teams are provided with pucks and basic first aid kits.

Club Colours & Design

The Club has determined a standard design and colour scheme and has a rigid policy regarding team jackets, track suits, and clothing and controls the style, colour, and design. All orders must go through the Club’s Equipment Director, Jo-Anne Graff. For more information, contact Jo-Anne Graff at (780) 450-8646.

Club Jackets & Track Suits

All players and new coaches will be provided with a SSAC track suit. Melton/leather jackets, ‘fleece’ jackets, and three-in one jackets are also available at a reasonable cost. These are not a requirement, but many of the players get them. The Club has a variety of SSAC golf shirts, sweat pants, 'hoodies', hats, etc offered at a very reasonable price.  All orders are to be made through the Club's Equipment Director, Jo-Anne Graff.

Club Helmets, Gloves & Equipment Bags

Black helmets, black hockey pants with Club logo, and gloves in Club colours form part of the teams’ uniform and are mandatory. Once you have made a team, Eagle gloves in Club colours are available for purchase from the Club (approx $165 – retail value $275). They are a special order item and are only available through the Club. Players’ pants must be black in colour and once the player has made a team, players must arrange to have the SSAC logo patch sewn on to them through United Cycle.

Player and goalie bags are available for purchase at cost. All orders are to be made through the Club’s Equipment Director, Jo-Anne Graff at (780) 450-8646.

And in closing ....

The success of the South Side Athletic Club is due to the continuing efforts of numerous volunteers who offer a substantial amount of time, expertise, and dedication to this quality hockey program. The affairs of the Club are conducted by an elected Executive Committee and by the Coaches and Managers. The majority of these volunteers do not have children in the hockey program and put forward their best efforts and intentions.

And so it shall continue ....

>> Due to the fact that the South Side Athletic Club must reflect
the ongoing revisions of Hockey Edmonton's Rules of Registration and the changes within Edmonton's AA hockey program; and in order to maintain competitive standards for our teams, the information we have provided in this handout should be viewed as a guideline, subject to change.
