FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. What equipment will SSAC provide each player?

A. Once a player has been signed to a CHA Player Card, and paid full registration fees, SSAC will provide the following equipment to each player at the beginning of the hockey season:

  • home and away socks and jerseys
  • a SSAC logo sewn to player‘s own pants by United Cycle (to be worn by all players)
  • FIRST year BANTAM players will receive a SSAC track suit

Helmets are not supplied and while it is suggested that the players purchase black helmets, the colour is not restricted.

Q. Are club jackets a requirement?

A. Club jackets are not a requirement, but most players get them. They cost in the neighborhood of $170 and are a standard design and color scheme – Melton leather bomber style jacket. The club has a rigid policy regarding team jackets and controls the style, colour, and design. All team orders must go through the Equipment Director.

Q. Can players get off-season rental of pants?

A. While supplies last, once the pants have been cleaned and repaired at the end of the hockey season, SSAC will rent pants to players during the off season for $25.00. A rental agreement and a deposit of $200 will be required in the event pants are not returned or damaged.

Q. Can players buy used equipment from the Club?

A. The Equipment Director may offer used pants that are in good condition for sale and will be offered on a first come first serve basis.

Q. Can my friend/brother/son help the Coaches on the bench?

A. No person under the age of 18 shall be on the bench without a helmet covering his head.  Any individual on the “bench" must be properly registered, for insurance purposes, either as a minor hockey player (CHA player card or Hockey Alberta team sheet) or official (CHA card).  For further information, check with the SSAC Registrar.

Q.  How were players selected for the tryout groupings?

A.  Registration was done through the mail and online through HCR. As the completed registration forms were received, players were assigned to groups based on the position they wished to try out in. For example, the first form received from a Forward was placed in Group One. The next form received from a Forward was placed in Group Two, and so on. When a forward has been entered in each group, the next form received from a Forward was placed in Group One as Forward number 2, and so on. The same process was applied to players for Defence or Goal. As a result, the composition of the groups was totally random, based on the order in which the player's form was received by the Registrar. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate requests to be placed in groupings with friends. We will, however, try to accommodate the placement of players from the same family into the same tryout group.

Q.  Can a parent coach for SSAC?

A.  It is SSAC's policy that no parent is permitted on the bench as a coach, manager, or trainer for a team where that parent's son/daughter is a player. Occasionally, a parent may be permitted to assist on the ice during a practice (with permission from the Hockey Operations Committee). In exceptional circumstances, a parent may be asked to assist on the bench for a single game or tournament (with permission from the Hockey Operations Committee). No one is permitted on the bench without first being CHA carded by SSAC's Registrar. A parent may be permitted on the bench for another SSAC team where his/her son/daughter is not a player.

The above is the club's policy given a best case scenario. However, in the past couple of years, all clubs are finding that experienced coaches are not applying to coach at the club level and some parent coaches have excellent qualifications. In the 2007-2008 season, therefore, SSAC has accepted a coaching position from one parent coach as an assistant in Bantam AA. That‘s 1 in approximately 50 coaches, trainers and directors over 9 teams.

Q.  What should I do if no one seems to listen to my concerns?

A.  Follow SSAC's Dispute Resolution Procedures. Remember to provide the circumstances of your issues in writing. It should also be noted that the club cannot address a concern that is presented anonymously as it limits the ability of the club to verify allegations.
